10 Best Attractions In Singapore

This article was originally on GET.com at: 10 Best Attractions In Singapore

Measuring at just a little under 720 square kms, Singapore does not exactly have a big land area to explore for those who want a little adventure. However the island city-state has much to be proud of, being an important financial centre in the region, known as one of the safest cities in the world, as well as having a world class infrastructure.

While we do not have the massive and stunning landscapes such as those in New Zealand or Iceland, the little red dot does have much to offer tourists (and locals) in terms of attractions and cultural experiences. Here is GET.com's guide to 10 of the best attractions the lion city has to offer.

1. Gardens By The Bay

Who can deny that our futuristic-looking gardens are so strangely enticing? With the colourful Supertree Grove, the tallest indoor waterfall within the Cloud Forest Dome and the largest glass greenhouse within the Flower Dome, what's not to like and marvel about the awesome Gardens by the Bay?

It provides a wonderful free activity for those on a budget, spending some good quality sight-seeing just walking through the tranquil gardens (remember to look out for the cute otter family!) and enjoy some street food fare at Satay by the Bay.

2. Botanic Gardens

Apart from having a magnificent skyline and beautiful architecture, Singapore is known for being a green city as well. Our Botanic Gardens are the first and only tropical botanic garden on Unesco's World Heritage List.

Major attractions include the Swan Lake that was constructed in 1866, a detailed look at Singapore's national flower – Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim (previously Vanda Miss Joaquim) and a unique Ginger Garden that houses several hundred species of ginger and a pool adorned with giant Amazon water lilies.

3. S.E.A Aquarium

Some of us might have had a chance to visit the huge S.E.A Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa, but do you know that it is actually the world's largest aquarium?

The blue sanctuary is home to more than 800 species of marine animals. Especially enchanting is the Ocean Journey, where you'll expect to see luminous jellyfish, the mysterious nautilus, the giant pacific octopus and other creatures that dwell in the depth of the oceans.

If you have a bigger budget, booking an Ocean Suite is highly recommended. The 11 exclusive villas are tucked into one side of the large aquarium so that guests will enjoy a spectacular private view of the sea in the luxury of their rooms.

4. Esplanade

Creating quite a commotion when it first launched, Singaporeans have all come to embrace our most-loved Esplanade as an iconic infrastructure representing the king of fruits, the durian.

Other than providing a great photo opportunity, taking a walk along the waterfront, listening to some of the free bands jamming outside and watching a theatre show in its luscious interior will appeal to any art lover.

5. Orchard Road

For those of you who love to shop, you might need more than a day to cover the thousands of shops in for the numerous malls lining the busy street. From luxury, international brands to home-grown artists, you will find it impossible to leave Orchard Road without buying one thing or another.

With most malls housing at least a food court (don't forget to use one of these food court discount cards to save money on your meals) and having countless food stalls and coffee houses, you know you'll always find a place to rest your tired feet and enjoy a caffeine boost to complete your shopping journey.

6. Street Food Culture

Food, glorious food! We already know Singaporeans are foodies, and more than that, we've got a really dynamic food culture and heritage to be proud of!

In fact, one of the best ways to to showcase our national identity and multiculturalism is through our mix of local cuisine. Any new visitors to Singapore must not miss the chance to savour the variety of street food we have, so a visit to a local hawker centre is a must! Maxwell food market, Lau Pa Sat and Amoy Street Food Centre will provide an abundance of choice.

7. Sentosa

8. Little India

Seen enough of the glitzy and glamorous buildings and architecture in the city? Have a walk along Little India to appreciate the more down-to-earth side of Singapore.

You'll find local markets, rows of shops selling gold jewellery, spice shops, Hindu temples and lots of cheap local food, especially Indian fare.

The buzzing neighbourhood with something happening at every corner is sure to wake up your senses; and while you are there, remember to drop by the 24-hour Mustafa centre for some cheap shopping!
