Wynn reaches deals with 4 Boston-area communities

Wynn reaches deals with 4 Boston-area communities for its proposed $1.2 billion Everett casino

BOSTON (AP) -- Wynn Resorts has signed agreements with four more Boston-area communities as it seeks to build a $1.2 billion resort-style casino in Everett.

The Las Vegas gambling company announced Monday that it has reached agreements of varying levels of commitment with Cambridge, Medford, Lynn and Melrose. The communities join Malden, which entered into an agreement with Wynn last year.

The agreements, which can be found on the Massachusetts Gaming Commission website, include annual payments to the communities and commitments to hire local employees and use and promote local businesses.

Wynn proposes a 100,000-square-foot casino with a 551-room, five-star hotel along the Mystic River.

Tuesday is the deadline for casino developers in the eastern region to reach so-called "surrounding community" agreements with designated municipalities. There also are "neighboring community" and "nearby community" agreements. Surrounding, neighboring and nearby communities are those located around a casino but not the designated "host community." The communities can qualify for varying degrees of financial or other compensation from the casino because they will be affected.

The announcement comes as the gambling commission is set to hold a public hearing Thursday on Boston's bid to be designated a host community for Wynn's proposed Everett casino and Mohegan Sun's proposed casino in Revere.
