Merck pulls up Dow as Apple investors cautious

Merck's analyst-beating earnings pulled up the Dow in opening trade Tuesday while Apple investors remained cautious after its strong results.

Five minutes into trade the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 54.12 points (0.30 percent) at 18,092.09, lifted by a 5.5 percent gain by Merck and a 0.8 percent rise in the iPhone maker.

But the broader S&P 500 was flat, adding just 0.09 (0.0 percent) at 2,109.01, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index rose 2.89 (0.06 percent) to 5,063.14.
