Dow edges to new record, S&P 500 essentially flat

The Dow Wednesday edged to a fresh record in a holiday-shortened session one day after topping 18,000 points for the first time ever.

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 18,030.82, up 6.65 points (0.04 percent).

The broad-based S&P 500 finished essentially flat at 2,082.11, down 0.06 of a point, while the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 8.05 (0.17 percent) to 4,773.47.

US stocks have been on a tear since the Federal Reserve last Wednesday kept interest rates low and pledged a cautious approach to raising rates.

Markets stormed higher early Wednesday, but weakened in the last minutes of trade. Markets will be closed Thursday for the Christmas holiday.
