Violence escalates in Israeli-Palestinian conflict

AKIKO FUJITA: In our World View today, fighting between Israel and Hamas entered its second week. Israeli forces continued unleashing airstrikes on Gaza on Monday targeting a major road West of the city and security compounds. Hamas fired rockets targeting towns in Southern Israel in exchange. Talks to reach a cease fire have made little progress so far.

The United Nations Security Council ended discussions over the weekend without issuing a statement while State Department officials are scheduled to hold discussions with Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, one day after they held similar talks with Israeli officials. Nearly 200 Palestinians have been killed in the week long fighting with roughly half of the dead women and children. 11 people have died in Israel.

Over in India, the number of new COVID-19 infections have dipped below 300,000 for the first time in nearly a month. India added 281,000 new cases over the last 24 hours, with 4,100 more deaths reported. That brings the total dead to more than 270,000 people. Government health experts say the number of new cases are starting to stabilize after hitting record highs for weeks.

And finally, more backlash against the Summer Olympic Games in Japan. A new poll published Monday shows 80% of the Japanese public is opposed to hosting the Tokyo games even as organizers scramble to safely pull off the event with less than two weeks or 10 weeks to go. The latest survey comes as the country extends its COVID-19 state of emergency. Japan's been struggling to control a fourth wave of infections with a surge pressuring health care systems across the country. An online petition calling for the games to be canceled has collected more than 350,000 signatures so far.
