Stocks trend lower heading into Monday's close, consumer discretionary holds onto gains

Yahoo Finance's Ines Ferre looks at how markets settled at the close of trading on Monday.

Video transcript

RACHELLE AKUFFO: We're less than two minutes away from the closing bell on a down day for the markets. Let's bring in Yahoo Finance's Ines Ferre to break down the market action. Hi, Ines.

INES FERRE: Hi, Rachelle, and some selling in the final minutes of trading. Let's take a look right now at the Dow, down 273 points. The NASDAQ down 3/8 of a percent. Look at this. The NASDAQ had been in the green earlier this morning. It also flipped into the green in this last hour of trading, but just couldn't hold that. And then the S&P 500, this is the one that we want to watch, 3,663.

And now you want to watch this level because if we close below 3,666, then this would be the June lows, the June 16 lows. And we would have punched below those June lows. And it looks like we may be heading in that direction. Taking a look also at the sectors, well, consumer discretionary just flipped into the red. You only have consumer staples that is in the green.
