S&P 500 companies ramp up stock buybacks in Q4

Yahoo Finance Live’s Brian Sozzi breaks down the stat of the day, showing the 9.6% increase in S&P 500 companies' stock buybacks compared to the third quarter.

Video transcript

BRIAN SOZZI: Corporations used the power of the stock buyback in the fourth quarter to pad profits and bet their stock price wouldn't stay down for long. Of the S&P 500 companies that have reported 4Q earnings, they spend on average 9.6% more on stock buybacks compared to the third quarter, according to data from S&P Dow Jones analyst Howard Silverblatt. Silverblatt estimates that this year will be the first year with over $1 trillion spent on buybacks. That's a big, big number.
