'Get Your Own Shopping Cart' - Crab Takes Up Residence in Abandoned Trolley

A diver on the Victoria coastline encountered a spider crab that had taken up residence in an abandoned shopping cart in the waters of Port Phillip Bay.

Diver and keen photographer Jules Casey is based on the Mornington Peninsula, which is on the shores of Port Phillip Bay.

She posted footage of the crab to Instagram on July 1, writing that the “gigantic” spider crab had “freshly moulted” and was “waiting in the safety of this trolley” until its shell hardened.

Casey noted that a few days after the footage was taken, the crab was no longer in residence in the shopping cart, and had likely moved to “deeper waters”.

The Parks Victoria website notes that during May and June, spider crabs “gather in their thousands in the shallow waters” of Port Phillip Bay, where they moult their shells.

Casey often posts footage of what she sees below the waves at Port Phillip Bay to her OneBreathDiver Instagram account, where she has over 90,000 followers.
