Neighbors Gather at Scene of Andrew Brown Shooting in Elizabeth City, North Carolina

A Pasquotank County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 40-year-old father, identified as Andrew Brown Jr, while carrying out a search warrant in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, on April 21, Sheriff Tommy Wooten II confirmed.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Wooten said the deputy was placed on administrative leave. Wooten confirmed there is bodycam video of the incident but said he had not yet reviewed the footage. He said no further information would be released until the investigation was complete but that the sheriff’s office would be “transparent with this situation.”

A representative of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said the agency has opened an investigation on the shooting at the request of the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office.

According to local news reports, Brown, 40, was father to 10 children. He was shot when he attempted to drive away from deputies, reports said.

Facebook Live videos streamed by local resident Kel Whittle show the scene on Perry Street, including the vehicle Brown was reportedly driving, as neighbors gathered to question what happened. Local media reported that Brown’s body was placed under a blue tent, and it was still there “hours after the shooting.” Credit: Kel Whittle via Storyful
