Market check: S&P 500 hits intraday record, travel stocks stumble

Yahoo Finance's Jared Blikre examines market and sector performances for the day as the S&P 500 hits an intraday record.

Video transcript

- On the YFi interactive of the S&P 500, we can see, this is a day four of a really nice rally. Look at those green candles right there. Kind of shaking off what was last Monday kind of a downbeat start to the mid-month or I guess, to the beginning of the end of the year here. Now, the Dow, not quite back up to its record highs, but it is clearing important resistance right now. And the NASDAQ also able to rise to its highs. And we can see just kind of taking out this level that we have right here.

So I also want to check out the Semiconductor Index. This is an index that just struck a record high today. We're seeing Nvidia and some other members up nicely. And I guess this would be a nice time. Just check out the NASDAQ 100. That's our retail board. And here we go. And we can see Apple up nicely. That's up over 1%, so is Microsoft, Tesla, and Facebook, and Nvidia each up more than 3%.

Let's go to that heat map on the semiconductors, where we can see AMD up 4%. That is an industry group leader that we're looking at. Now, the travel sector having a bit of a stumble today. And here, we can see Carnival Cruise lines off 1%. Though, it had been off quite a bit more about 5%, 6% close to the open. So seeing some of those losses getting paired right now.

Now, in terms of the sector action, it's really about the mega caps. Tech sector is number one that's at 1.38 followed by consumer discretionary, consumer communication services, and we also have energy outperforming the S&P 500 right there. And to the downside, as you said, Zach, all of these sectors in the green. But utilities and health care, the biggest sector laggards right now.

As promised, I'm going to get to that news on GoDaddy and Starboard. That is the activist shareholder group that has now taken a 6.5% stake that they have reported to the SEC. This is around about an $800 million stake in this company. And you can see the market cap of GoDaddy here right around $13, $14 billion.

I do want to check out some price action here. Over the last three months, now this is a stock that saw some volatility around its earnings announcement in early November. It came back to support and has launched over that. But you can see, I'm going to put up a max chart of GoDaddy going back to its 2015 IPO. Look what it's done over the last three years, basically nothing. The good news is it is right back approaching the upper end of its range. So we'll see if the news from Starboard can gain additional investor action here.

But also looking good on that front. We were talking about it with Brian Sozzi earlier. And he said, there's nobody better to lead this fight than Starboard. So I'll take Sozzi's word at it. Guys.

- Yeah, not even sure how much of a fight it might be. Just kind of more doubling down on what's been working well for GoDaddy and trying to squeeze a little bit more out of it. So we'll see what they do there. But clearly, today, people enjoying the move there. Jared Blikre, we'll check back in with you later on in the show.
