'I'm Here to Protect You': Officer Comforts Scared Girl at Houston Protest

A police officer was seen comforting a young girl at a George Floyd protest in Houston in video uploaded on June 3.

According to the girl’s father, Simeon Bartee, she asked the officer: “Are you gonna shoot us?”

This video shows the moments afterwards. In this footage filmed by Bartee, the officer can be seen kneeling beside the girl with his arm around her, as a woman leans in to talk to the girl saying, “Don’t say that, OK?”

“I’m here to protect you, okay? I’m not here to hurt you at all,” the officer says. “You can protest, you can party, you can do whatever you want. Just don’t break nothing.”

Protests, some violent, have broken out across the US since May 26, the day after video circulated of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinning Floyd, a black 46-year-old, to the ground with his knee on Floyd’s neck. Floyd died soon after. Credit: Simeon Bartee via Storyful
