GM to use Tesla chargers

GM is following Ford's lead and partnering with Tesla on a deal that would give its EV owners access to Tesla's chargers. Yahoo Finance explains what these partnerships mean for the EV charging landscape.

AKIKO FUJITA: General Motors is following in the footsteps of rival Ford Motor, and partnering with Tesla to use the company's charging network, gaining access to 12,000 chargers starting next year.

JULIE HYMAN: Why is it a win for Tesla? Is it a win for Tesla?

AKIKO FUJITA: Tesla yesterday by making that announcement, we're talking about GM and Ford, the two largest North American car makers. That essentially says that Tesla gets to lead the way. Tesla has the best infrastructure in place. And in order for drivers to get on board with EVs, you need to feel comfortable that you've got a charger ready to go wherever you are.

CRAIG IRWIN: For Ford and General Motors obviously, it's good for both of them because their customers are not going to deal with the issue of range anxiety. Range anxiety is actually very real.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: I'm a little bit more open to it. If I knew I had more access to a supercharger closer to me, depending on whether I got a Ford and I didn't feel that I was locked into necessarily getting a Tesla, I'd be definitely more open to getting one.

COLIN RUSCH: So for Tesla, I think it's just monetizing an asset that they have. And for these other OEMs it's a realization that they can simplify their lives and really focus on some of the challenges that they have ahead.

CRAIG IRWIN: This is a great move for Tesla. It's a great move for both General Motors and Ford.
