French's celebrates National Mustard Day with specialty donuts

Yahoo Finance Live samples French's new mustard-flavored donuts.

Video transcript

[MUSIC PLAYING]

DAVE BRIGGS: All right, hot dog fans, mark your calendars. Saturday is National Mustard Day, hence the yellow robe. If dogs are not your thing and you're more of a donut fan, Allie Canal has the collaboration no one was asking for--

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Woo.

DAVE BRIGGS: --to my knowledge, Allie.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Yeah, no, this is literally a mustard donut from French's in collaboration with Dough Donuts. They're an artisanal donut maker here in New York City. And in honor of National Mustard Day, which is Saturday, you could get a freebie of one of these if you visit Dough locations in New York or online for a limited time. They're promoting this as a re-imagined glazed donut. It smells-- it does smell like mustard.

SEANA SMITH: It has a very strong smell.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: It's very potent. Very potent. So, you know, guys, I can't resist a good taste test.

DAVE BRIGGS: Yeah, no.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: So now--

DAVE BRIGGS: The odor catches you from about six feet away.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: The odor, and it's interesting because there is a global mustard shortage right now. It's very difficult to get mustard on shelves. France is going through this. Prices are going up. So if you can't find mustard at the grocery store, you can eat it on your donut. So let's do it.

DAVE BRIGGS: I am very skeptical about this, so I'm going to let you two dig in and get your scores. So, go ahead, Seana, before Allie chews.

SEANA SMITH: I was expecting it to be horrible, so it's not that-- it kind of has this much sweeter--

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Like a lemony.

SEANA SMITH: Yeah, like a lemony, lighter--

DAVE BRIGGS: You like to score things, Brooke, so if you would, give us a number.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Guys, I kind of like it. I think I really do like I would give it like a five

DAVE BRIGGS: I think it's actually pretty good.

SEANA SMITH: Really? OK, well.

DAVE BRIGGS: I'd say a solid 6 and 1/2. Allie, what do you got?

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I think I would go a 6. But at first bite, more mustardy. But then it turns into, like, this lemony, tangy thing.

DAVE BRIGGS: Hmm.

SEANA SMITH: Yeah, I don't know. Rachelle, have we sold you? Have they sold you on it? I'm still skeptical. I don't want to be lumped into that yet.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: I mean, I'm not going to lie. I already don't like mustard, so the idea of a mustard donut is not really-- it's not really my thing. But I'm not a good yardstick because I also don't like ketchup. But I mean, I like the idea. We saw a lot of comments online saying it's, you know, it's zesty, it's tangy. So I guess, is it more like a citrusy flavor?

And then as Allie was saying that on Saturday, if you're not in New York and you're not able to get it, if you go onto the Dough website, you can actually get a complimentary order, and they actually do nationwide shipping. So if you want to get in on the fun and try it yourself, I might hop on Saturday and order it. I'm at least willing to give it a try.

SEANA SMITH: OK, all right. I was going to say, Rachelle, I don't know if you want to order this if you're not a fan of mustard, to begin with. I love mustard, and I'm still--

DAVE BRIGGS: I'm upping my number.

SEANA SMITH: --not completely sold.

DAVE BRIGGS: It's a 7 and 1/2 for me.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Oh, he's liking it--

SEANA SMITH: Wow.

DAVE BRIGGS: I love it.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: --the more you taste it.

DAVE BRIGGS: I actually really like it.

SEANA SMITH: Where we've come from what we were talking about during the commercial break.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: That's because Dave is greedy.

SEANA SMITH: All right. All right, well, we are now going to let you guys go.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: Dave always ups the number the more he eats.

SEANA SMITH: We're out of time. We're going to eat some of these donuts. Dave might eat the entire box before tomorrow afternoon. You never know, at this point.

DAVE BRIGGS: They're awesome!

SEANA SMITH: [INAUDIBLE] And you're also-- we didn't even address the robe that you're in yet.
