Fireworks as Barbados Celebrates Becoming a Republic

Fireworks lit up the sky in the early hours of November 30 in Saint Lucy as Barbados became a republic.

The Government of Barbados announced in September 2020 that it intended to no longer be a constitutional monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II will no longer be head of state, but the country will remain a member of the Commonwealth.

Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as the island nation’s first president just an hour before the country became a republic, at midnight, according to a government website.
