Controlled Avalanche Sweeps Down Mountain Near Austrian Ski Resort

A controlled avalanche was filmed rolling down a mountainside above a ski resort in Baad, Austria, on January 16.

Video shared by Boaz Bego shows a small puff of white appear at the top of the mountain after an explosion was used to set off the controlled snowslide. Moments later, a wave of snow makes its way down to the bottom of the valley near the village.

“This was a controlled avalanche after 1.5 meter snowfall in 24 hours,” Bego told Storyful.

“The local avalanche committee determines which places on the mountains should be bombed to keep the local people, streets, pistes, walking routes and Nordic routes safe from avalanches,” he said. Credit: Boaz Bego via Storyful
