Aid groups say Greece's new migrant center 'a jail'

Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi said the camps provide better living conditions alongside increased security precautions.

But MSF Head of Mission Iorgos Karagiannis said "for us it's a jail," adding that "they will be detained, that is the truth".

He added it is a declaration of the "harmful policies" preferred by EU leaders.

Greek government figures show the total amount of asylum seekers currently in the country at some 42,000, down from about 82,000 in 2020.
