Afghans Flee Conflict as Taliban Targets Major Cities

Civilians in Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second-largest city, were forced to flee their homes as government forces defended cities from intensified Taliban attacks.

Footage shared by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty shows people displaced by recent fighting in Kandahar.

According to reports, the Taliban has been targeting the capitals of Kandahar, Herat, and Helmand provinces in recent months, following the withdrawal of US forces after 20 years of military operations in the country.

President Ashraf Ghani said on Monday that he stood “forcefully against the Taliban’s aggression.”

Speaking to parliament on Monday, the president reportedly blamed the “abrupt” withdrawal of US troops for increased conflict but said the US had pledged its full support and that the situation should be under control within six months. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful
