VALENCIA, Calif. , Oct. 11, 2019 /CNW/ -- Today, luxury cruise line Cunard celebrated the beginning of construction on the line's 249th ship with a steel cutting ceremony at Fincantieri's Castellammare di Stabia Shipyard in Italy . The first piece of steel cut will be used as a sculpture displayed on the new ship for guests to enjoy and marks a landmark moment in the company's 179-year history. The steel cutting ceremony marks the commencement of the building process for Cunard's new ship, which is set to join the fleet in 2022.

Chairman Micky Arison, who also owns the Miami Heat, and CEO Arnold Donald both insisted the company is doing a lot, but that it takes time to implement real changes at a company with 120,000 employees, more than 100 cruise ships and nine different brands.

Carnival Corp. executives pledged anew Friday that steps are being taken to curb ocean pollution, which was the subject of a recent $20 million federal penalty imposed because of continued environmental violations. Carnival outlined some of those steps at a hearing before a pair of skeptical Miami federal judges. CEO Arnold Donald says the world's largest cruise line is embracing a new culture of compliance with environmental laws from the top down.
