BASF maintains 2023 forecast, faces subdued demand

German chemicals giant BASF on Thursday maintained its profit forecast for 2023 but warned of great uncertainty in the global economy as it saw demand weaken across its segments. BASF is targeting sales this year in a range of 84-87 billion euros ($92.84-$96.15 billion) and adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of 4.8-5.4 billion euros, the company said upon confirming its preliminary results for the first quarter. "BASF started off 2023 better than analysts had expected – and in a stagnating and difficult economic environment," said chief executive Martin Brudermueller.

BASF warns of earnings decline, cuts jobs in battle against costs

BASF said it would cut 2,600 jobs, halt share buybacks and hike investment to improve competitiveness as it warned of a further decline in earnings due to rising costs. BASF, which in October laid out plans to cut annual non-production costs in Europe by 500 million euros, said on Friday this would lead to 2,600 job cuts, or about 2.3% of its global workforce, including about 1,800 job losses at its Ludwigshafen headquarters. It also announced plans to cut another 200 million euros in annual fixed production costs.

Indonesia says BASF, Eramet near $2.6 billion deal to process nickel for EV batteries

Germany's BASF and French miner Eramet are finalising a $2.6 billion partnership deal to invest in a facility in Indonesia to process nickel for use in batteries for electric vehicles, Indonesian officials said. The Indonesian announcement comes as Southeast Asia's biggest economy has been courting global companies to build facilities to produce EV batteries and electric cars to exploit the country's rich nickel resources. In separate emailed responses, the companies confirmed they were assessing a hydro-metallurgical project to produce battery-grade nickel and cobalt from Eramet's mine in Indonesia's Weda Bay, but did not confirm the proposed investment.

Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman's investment firm LetterOne owns a 27.3% stake in it.

BASF seeks 'permanent' cost cuts at European operations

BASF said costs at its European sites must be cut to a "permanently" smaller size because of a triple burden of sluggish growth, high energy costs and over-regulation, with the German industrial giant's boss throwing his weight behind a planned expansion in China. "These challenging framework conditions in Europe endanger the international competitiveness of European producers and force us to adapt our cost structures as quickly as possible and also permanently," the chemical maker's CEO Martin Brudermueller said in a statement on Wednesday. In the first nine months of 2022, natural gas costs at BASF's European sites - which include its largest complex at Ludwigshafen in southwest Germany, where it makes everything from vitamins, foam chemicals and engineering plastics to pesticides - were about 2.2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) higher than a year earlier.

BASF could cut output further amid fragile gas supply

BASF is monitoring the natural gas market closely and could cut production further if needed after Russia suspended deliveries through its main gas pipeline to Germany, the chemicals giant said on Monday. Responding to questions from Reuters, the Germany-based company, one of the largest natural gas users in the country, added it was bracing for high and volatile gas prices. European stocks fell on Monday and gas prices surged after Russia indefinitely extended a shutdown of Nord Stream 1, one of its main gas supply routes to Europe.

BASF readies more ammonia production cuts in gas supply crunch

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Germany's BASF, the world's largest chemical company, is cutting ammonia production further due to soaring natural gas prices, it said on Wednesday, with potential ramifications from farming to fizzy drinks. Germany's biggest ammonia maker SKW Piesteritz and number four Ineos also said they could not rule out production cuts as the country grapples with disruption to Russian gas supplies. Ammonia plays a key role in the manufacturing of fertiliser, engineering plastics and diesel exhaust fluid.

BASF says Q2 operating income well above projections

Quarterly earnings before interest, tax and special items was 2.34 billion euros ($2.36 billion), a touch below the 2.36 billion euros it earned a year earlier, BASF said in an unscheduled statement on Monday, citing preliminary figures. BASF, which is scheduled to publish detailed results on July 27, said its full-year outlook remained unchanged. Chief Executive Martin Burdermueller warned last month that while the group enjoyed strong pricing power during the first half, it would likely face a considerable downturn early in the second half of the year.

'Off the charts' chemical shortages hit U.S. farms

U.S. farmers have cut back on using common weedkillers, hunted for substitutes to popular fungicides and changed planting plans over persistent shortages of agricultural chemicals that threaten to trim harvests. Spraying smaller volumes of herbicides and turning to less-effective fungicides increase the risk for weeds and diseases to dent crop production at a time when global grain supplies are already tight because the Ukraine war is reducing the country's exports. Interviews with more than a dozen chemical dealers, manufacturers, farmers and weed specialists showed shortages disrupted U.S. growers' production strategies and raised their costs.
