Energy investments. Thinking ahead. Is COAL dead? Long about the time we knew the results of the election I pondered which stocks might benefit. No not the green energy ones. Everyone was already on that band wagon. The ones in other countries where the reduction in US Oil output (pipelines, fracking, etc) would generate increased energy demands. Of course China came to mind. So what was there plan to replace the reduction in delivery of Sands-Tars-oil? Why did they need Sands-Tar-oil in the first place? Bitumen and lots of it for roads in China was one of the reasons. So where else could China get a source internally? Although harder to acquire, Bituminous coal can be mined. So I did a little research and found that Yanzhou Coal Mining is one the major players. Investigating further. While it seems China has commented to a limit on Coal fired energy transmission plants for the public, that is not the full story of China's coals use. https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-will-china-build-hundreds-of-new-coal-plants-in-the-2020s A little unannounced tidbit is the number of coal fired power plants being built to support industry and military projects. They aren't part of the green plan. https://www.powermag.com/chinas-economic-recovery-will-be-powered-by-coal/ Somewhere in the neighbor hood of one to two a week are coming on line and are planned until at least 2030. And no you did not read that incorrectly. It is hard to get the real information but yes one to two a week. Some big, some smaller. https://www.energylivenews.com/2021/02/04/china-built-over-three-times-as-much-coal-plant-capacity-as-the-rest-of-the-world-in-2020/
As a military strategy is has its merits compared to the Wests interlaced failing electrical grids. Major rail lines are created, dams built and ghost towns are placed along supply lines which include independent infrastructures including coal fired energy production. Plants are sometimes over sized to provide future energy needs from you guessed it, coal.
The same theory to select stocks goes for external sources of energy production for oil production and oil drilling. As second and third world countries develop their thirst for energy will exceed demand only second to food.
The recovery in the stock price of RIG is a good indicator. You might shut down off shore development in first world countries but you have just given the green light to the value of energy in the rest of the world.
(If you only have time to read one link read this one. https://ourfiniteworld.com/2021/05/04/how-the-worlds-energy-problem-has-been-hidden/ )
I am not here to debate not buying energy stocks. If you choose not to buy the never ending list of Sin stocks that is your option.
My point is there is many opportunities to develop investment strategies based on a world view instead of just a US view and what Crammer is selling.

Disclosure: I hold shares of YZCAY, RIG and various other energy stocks (including green ones)
