These countries consume highest volume of alcohol

-Chaitra Anand

According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the biggest drinkers amongst developed economies are in Europe as per the most recent figures in recent years (200-2013 or nearest years)

Among the 34 OECD nations, Lithuania was the largest consumer with adults consuming an average of 14 litres of alcohol a year. Austria, Estonia and Czech Republic followed up closely. India came in at Number 32 among the 34, indicating that alcohol consumption is a lot lesser while compared to Europe.

Alcohol consumption rises with increase in standard of living in an economy. It is also highly culturally influenced. Hence alcohol consumption is lesser in countries such as India, Indonesia, Turkey & Israel, where religious reasons limit alcohol consumption.

Data from World Health Organisation shows that alcohol accounts for nearly 6% of global deaths. The report is also a warning that hazardous drinking and heavy periodic drinking are on the rise, especially in women and young people.
