PHOTOS: Cafe inspired by Japan's railway stations opens in Singapore

The Japan Rail Cafe opened in Singapore on Sunday (4 Dec) at the Tanjong Pagar centre. The first overseas venture of the East Japan Railway Company (JR East), the travel and train-themed cafe provides Japan lovers with an authentic Japanese railway experience.

The cafe space is divided into 3 parts – the dining area, rail pass ticketing area and retail area. Every month, the cafe will feature a different region in Japan, which aims to enlighten customers about the less-explored places in the country.

The food served at the cafe features a range of foods commonly found at Japan's railway stations. Customers can look forward to a scrumptious serving of burgers, Japanese curries and rice sets made from the freshest ingredients. Each month, a special menu will be launched with a few dishes native to the featured region.

At the cafe, customers can purchase Japan Rail passes at the in-store ticketing counter. The rail passes issued are sold by JR Kyushu, JR West, JR Shikoku, JR Central and JR Hokkaido, covering almost all regions in Japan on a variety of JR-owned transportation lines.

Customers can also purchase a variety of food, clothes and bags from the retail corner of the Japan Rail Cafe. The products featured will be from the month's featured region. The retail corner gives customers a glimpse of the widely popular "Eki Naka" culture, which means "in-station shopping".

As an outlet for people to share their experiences of travelling to Japan and interest in Japanese culture, the Japan Rail Cafe also serves as a platform to build a bigger community of Japan lovers in Singapore.

Monthly workshops and seminars will also be held at the cafe for people to deepen their love of the Japanese culture and lifestyle.
