The most inspiring interior design books for your coffee table
We could all do with a little interior design inspiration from time to time. Thankfully, the last few months have seen a spate of new books about the home that are so exquisitely designed that they call out to be proudly displayed on a coffee table. Together with their glorious front covers and inspiring content, each book offers a fresh take on interiors.
The considered and confident use of colour in Every Room Should Sing and Jungalow Decorate Wild gives a bright and bold colour palette a long overdue seat at the interiors table, which has erstwhile been dominated by minimalism and hygge neutral-toned comforts. These two books also give serious consideration to the importance of joy and magic in interior design injecting some fun into an endeavour that can often seem stressful. Both free us from the paralysing fear of getting it wrong.
There is also an increased lens of diversity in terms of the design aesthetic - both African and Indian design choices fit in beautifully and seamlessly into many of the homes profiled. There is also, even more excitingly, diversity in terms of the ethnicity of the voices and stories profiled. Diverse voices give us new insight into interiors and what makes a home and these books are all the more richer for it. One title, Artists in Residence, takes us inside Jean Michel Basquiat’s New York SoHo home, a space so impressive that it reduced the writer to tears.

1) Every Room Should Sing by Beata Heuman
Beata Heuman is a wonderfully creative interior designer who brings a confident, bold and playful energy into every space she creates. She is inspired by British, West African and her native Swedish design, resulting in a unique fusion which works perfectly. Her beautifully designed cloth-covered book is filled with beautiful pictures and drawings, offering thoughtful insight into her design process.

2) Inside Marrakesh: Enchanting Homes and Gardens by Meryanne Loum-Martin
In lieu of international holidays given Covid restrictions, the next best thing is surely Meryanne Loum-Martin's beautiful book on Marrakesh. We are given a visual tour of Loum-Martin's beautiful riad and told about the fascinating almost surreal story behind her home and garden. She then takes us through a selection of the most delectable properties in Marrakesh, while also explaining the unfailingly interesting stories behind them.

3) Hill House Vintage, The Art of Creating a Joyful Life by Paula Sutton
Paula Sutton is the phenomenon behind the wildly popular Hill House Vintage Instagram account. The size and dedication of her social media following (nearly 500,000 on IG) is testament to the sheer force of Sutton's warmth, good nature and joyful outlook, set amid the stellar interior of Hill House, her Norfolk home. This book is available to pre-order now and promises to be an illustration-packed dive into her life at Hill House and a guide on how to live life more happily. A must-read in these times.

4) Jungalow Decorate Wild by Justina Blakeney
Justina Blakeney is the force behind Jungalow, the US lifestyle brand with an international outlook which celebrates colour, pattern and diversity. In this book, Justina takes us on a personal exploration of what inspires the beautifully wild spaces she designs. She talks about being “Blewish” - half Black, half Jewish - and how this deeply informs her interiors aesthetic. For her, “the magic is in the mix” as she describes wonderfully innovative design styles including “West Afri Coastal” and “Moroc-Cali”. In doing so, Blakeney inspires the reader to consider their own roots and how they can be celebrated in our own homes. 5) Artists in Residence by Melissa Wyse
This book invites you inside some of the world’s most creative homes with a tour of the residences of truly great artists. It transports you into these homes by the way of delicate and beautifully evocative watercolour illustrations and lyrical text. This tome is particularly special for the diversity of the artists selected, including the homes of Hassan Hajjaj, Frida Kahlo and Jean Michel Basquiat alongside Monet and the Bloomsbury set's Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. The writer also explores how the decor of these residences can be used as inspiration for your own way of living.

6) From Mud Huts to Skyscrapers by Christin Paxman
Although not technically an interiors book, nor recently published, I had to include From Mud Huts to Skyscrapers - an exploration of architecture through the ages aimed at children. Coffee table books shouldn’t just be for adults and so many of children’s books these days have information that everyone can benefit from. This one is no different - a beautifully designed, information-packed and wondrously illustrated tour through a myriad of architectural styles. After all, it's never too early to start influencing the design taste of your little ones and to help them carve out their own aesthetic favourites.
