U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team Takes Home Six Olympic Medals

Age: 24

Hometown: Spring, Texas

The most famous gymnast on the U.S. team, Simone Biles was widely expected to bring home gold. However, Biles, who is recognized as the best gymnast in the world, withdrew from the competition for mental health reasons. Biles made headlines earlier this summer as the first woman to perform the Yurchenko double pike vault in competition, and, thus far, only men have completed it at the Olympics. Though Biles skipped the all-around and three individual events, she returned to competition for the balance beam, where she won a bronze medal.

Age: 18

Hometown: St. Paul, Minnesota

This is Lee's first Olympics and she was instrumental in earning the Americans the silver medal in the team competition. She also garnered the gold medal in the all-around individual competition, nailing all of her routines. Lee, who is the first Hmong American to compete for the United States at the Olympics, is a world-class talent on the uneven bars, an event in which she won the bronze medal.

Age: 20

Hometown: Spring, Texas

Chiles and Biles are close friends; they're actually training mates at the World Champions Centre in Texas. Chiles is one of the most consistent gymnasts on the team, with no major mistakes in any of her 24 routines this year. At the Olympic trials, Chiles finished third, behind Biles and Lee

Age: 18

Hometown: Isanti, Minnesota

In January, McCallum broke her hand while training on the beam, an injury which needed surgery. She now has a plate and seven screws in it; however, she's not letting that stop her. She's now the fourth in the four-person group competing in the team events. McCallum's specialty is beam, where she won bronze at the U.S. National Championships.

Age: 24

Hometown: Gilbert, Arizona

Skinner is one of the two members of the team competing as specialists, rather than in team events. She's already familiar with the Games—she was an alternate at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Skinner was not able to crack the top two scores in any of the qualifying events, ending her Olympic run. However, since Biles withdrew from vault, Skinner was able to compete, which resulted in her winning the silver medal.

Age: 21

Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona

Carey is also competing in the Games as an individual, though ended up subbing in for Biles in the all-around. She's known for her floor routine, which earned her a gold medal in the individual event competition. Carey previously earned gold as part of the U.S. team at the 2019 Gymnastics World Championships.
