A The Suicide Squad producer has revealed why the reboot doesn't reference the original movie.

The film, has been released later this month in the UK and next month in the US, will not be related to the critically planned Suicide Squad of 2016 – despite featuring several actors in their same roles.

Speaking recently, The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran revealed why that is.

Explaining that The Suicide Squad would be "starting from ground zero", Safran revealed the James Gunn film would 'not be a sequel' to the original and "not really a reboot either".

He also said the producers were keen that the film would "stand on its own two feet".

"This was starting from ground zero, starting from scratch," he told Den of Geek.

"All the characters that [James Gunn] selected were just characters that he was a fan of and wanted to play with.

"I think, in typical fashion for James, he picks more obscure characters.

"He liked the idea of being able to take these characters and imbue them with whatever characters he really wanted, or characteristics that he really wanted to play with."

Safran added: "We just don't address [the original movie] in any tangible form.

"Yes, they're the characters and actors that played them in the first movie, but we really wanted to make sure that this stands on its own two feet.

"It's not a sequel, but there are some characters that were in the first movie, so it's not really a full reboot either. So we just call it James Gunn's The Suicide Squad."
