Berkshire Hathaway has held Visa since 3Q11

According to its 3Q11 filings, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK) bought more than 2.3 million shares of Visa (V). In its latest filings at the end of 1Q16, Berkshire reported total holdings of 10.2 million shares in Visa. The increase of 8.0 million shares over the last four and a half years shows that BRK is optimistic about Visa’s performance.

Visa has generated investor returns of 9.7% in the trailing 12-month period and -5.7% in the trailing one-month period. In comparison, it generated returns of -1% year-to-date. The company’s share price fell 0.7% in the trailing five-day period. Since BRK disclosed its holdings in the company, Visa’s share price has risen significantly by 221%.

Visa’s share price has risen 1.9%, 20.4% ,22%, and 46.4% in the one-month, three-month, six-month, and 12-month periods, respectively, after BRK’s disclosure of its Visa holdings.

Shareholder value

Of the 36 analysts covering Visa, 28 have “buy” recommendations and eight have “hold” recommendations on the stock.

Analysts’ stock price target for the company is $89, with a median target estimate of $88. Visa is trading at a discount of 14.6% to its median target.

Visa accounted for 0.61% of the BRK portfolio at the end of 1Q16 and 3.7% of the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK). The other top holdings of XLK include Apple (AAPL) at 12.8% and Microsoft (MSFT) at 10%.
