When it comes to investment properties, many owners opt for quick fix wealth remedies over holistic Feng Shui designs. After all, getting maximum returns is the order of the day right?
It is essential that you approach your investment property’s Feng Shui the same way as you would for your personal space. Creating a conducive living environment attracts buyers and that’s certainly going to improve your bottom line.
So what should you look out for before confirming your purchase? Here’s a step-by-step Feng Shui checklist for selecting your first investment property.
Identify features of surrounding buildings
Feng Shui is about the creation of harmony between humans and their living environment. Hence, surrounding structures will have an impact on your property’s Feng Shui. For example, if a facing building has sharp features, then it will create apprehension among residents.
In addition, a building that is sandwiched between two other structures is likely to cause its dwellers to feel listless and pessimistic as the air currents between the two buildings converge to charge at the one being sandwiched in between.
These are just some examples of surrounding negative energies that affect residential Feng Shui. It is best to consult your Feng Shui master to assess the property’s Feng Shui before making a decision.
Consider building height
A building’s height is also an important consideration when selecting an ideal property. It is recommended that investors opt for apartments on higher floors or tall buildings. This can help reduce the likelihood of encountering negative forces.
Also, the property’s front, representative of ambition and potential, needs to be unobstructed. Moreover, it shouldn’t face carparks or main roads as noise produced by traffic is a negative selling point.
In addition, it is ideal to select a property that is situated near large water bodies such as reservoirs or the sea.
Should a potential purchase fulfil most of the above conditions, the next thing to do is determine property facing.
Home’s main entry faces auspicious direction
Your home’s orientation where the biggest façade of the house faces is not limited to main door direction. In Feng Shui, the luck cycle changes once every 20 years. The current cycle is known as Period 8 (2004 – 2023).
During Period 8, favourable directions include northeast and southwest. In the upcoming Period 9 (2024 – 2043), the auspicious orientations are north and south.
East and west-facing houses are not recommended as these two directions aren’t deemed auspicious for at least another 25 years. Geomantic reasons aside, residents of such homes are exposed to uncomfortable heat from the rising and setting sun.
After shortlisting properties that face auspicious directions, interior considerations are then taken into account.
Refrain from choosing houses near hospitals or cemeteries
Houses near hospitals or cemeteries contain excessive yin energy, which not only disrupts family harmony, but also causes inhabitants to suffer from lack of initiative and poor concentration.
To counter this, you can introduce yang energy into the home by regularly hosting social gatherings, using bright colours in the living room, displaying family photos and opening the curtains to allow sunlight to enter the house.
Kitchen door shouldn’t face the main door
In Feng Shui, it is taboo for a kitchen’s entrance to be aligned with the front door as positive energies that enter the house are broken down by the heat produced from cooking. This will lead to challenges in retaining wealth and poor health of the female owner.
To reduce negative effects, the kitchen door should remain closed when cooking. If there is no door to the kitchen, then it is advisable to install one.
Ensure that the kitchen stove is properly installed
The stove is an important household fixture as it symbolises family health and wealth. Therefore, there are a number of important factors to note when it comes to installing a stove.
First, the stove shouldn’t face south, even though it is an auspicious direction in the upcoming Period 9 as both orientation and stove belong to the fire element. An overwhelming fire element presence can lead to fiery tempers and quarrels in the home.
Also, the kitchen sink shouldn’t face the stove as it represents the water element and is in conflict with the fire element of the stove. From a Feng Shui standpoint, the clash between fire and water is detrimental to interpersonal relationships.
Finally, avoid having the stove under ceiling beams as it puts “pressure” on the chef and affects his/her physical and mental wellbeing.
Choose rectangular-shaped houses
A rectangular-shaped house is ideal in Feng Shui as there are no missing corners and it is balanced. In general, regular shapes should be considered as irregular-shaped houses do not allow for smooth energy flow.
