US Visit | 'The Quad - a Force for Global Good': PMO Tweets Photo of Leaders

The Quad Leader's Summit, on Friday, 24 September, began at the White House with Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Australian PM Scott Morrison and Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga in attendance.

Meanwhile, PM Modi's office tweeted a photograph of the four Quad leaders, captioned: "The Quad- a force for global good."

Prior to this, PM Modi, who is on a five-day visit to the United States, met US President Biden at the White House, on Friday, 24 September, following which he also tweeted photographs of the bilateral meeting at the oval office.

"I thank you for the warm welcome accorded to me and my delegation. Earlier, we had an opportunity to hold discussions, and at that time you had laid out the vision for India-US bilateral relations," Prime Minister Modi had said to President Biden, during the meet.

Modi, on Thursday, had met with Vice President Kamala Harris, Australian PM Scott Morrison, and Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, among others.

  • Prime Minister Modi, on Thursday, met with the CEOs of a number of leading companies across various industries, including Adobe, General Atomics, and Blackstone Group, among others.

  • He also held bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Thursday.

  • The prime minister will be addressing the United National (UN) General Assembly in New York, on Saturday.

  • Modi had landed in the US on 23 September. "My visit to the US would be an occasion to strengthen the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership with USA," he had said ahead of his arrival.

Addressing the attendees of the summit, Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga in his opening remarks, said:

Australian PM Scott Morrison, in his opening remarks at the Quad summit, was quoted by ANI as saying:

""We believe in a free and open Indo-pacific because we know that is what delivers a strong and prosperous region."" -

US President, in his opening remarks at the Quad summit, welcomed the prime ministers of Australia, India and Japan to the White House. As per ANI, he further said:

A meeting of the Quad grouping is expected to begin shortly at the East Room of the White House. Prime Minister Modi will attend the meeting.

The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) is a grouping between India, US, Japan, and Australia.

'Discussed India-US to Cooperation on COVID, Climate Change': PM Modi After Meeting With Joe Biden

"Had an outstanding meeting with President Biden. His leadership on critical global issues is commendable. We discussed how India and USA will further scale-up cooperation in different spheres and work together to overcome key challenges like COVID-19 and climate change," PM Modi tweeted after his meeting with the US president.

According to ANI, the Indian delegation for the bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden led by PM Modi included EAM Dr S Jaishankar, NSA Doval, Foreign Secretary HV Shringla, India's ambassador to US TS Sandhu, Jt Secretary to the PM RG Shresth and Private Secretary to the PM Vivek Kumar.

Meanwhile, the Biden led delegation included Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Assistant to President for National Security Affairs Jake Sullivan, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs, NSC Kurt Campbell.

In Meeting With Modi, President Biden Recalls Mumbai Visit

During his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, US President Joe Biden recalled his visit to Mumbai as the then US Vice President.

"When I was in Mumbai as Vice President (of US)… the Indian Press asked me do I have any relatives in India. And I said I am not sure, but in 1972, I got a letter from a person with the last name Biden from India… Next morning, at my press conference, the Indian Press told me you have five Biden’s in India,” he said, in a lighter vein.

PM Modi, speaking to the president on the subject, said "You mentioned about people in India with 'Biden' surname. You had discussed the same with me. I hunted for some documents. I have brought them with me. Maybe these will help you out."

"When I showed the PM to his seat, I pointed out that the seat is occupied almost every day by an Indian American (US Vice President Kamala Harris). Vice President's mother was from India - a scientist & a remarkable woman," Biden noted at the meeting.

"I've long believed that US-India relationship can help us solve a lot of global challenges. In fact, back in 2006, I had said that by 2020 India and the US will be among the closest nations in the world," PM Modi stated during his bilateral interaction with Biden.

"Each of the subjects mentioned by President Biden are crucial for the India-USA friendship. His efforts on COVID-19, mitigating climate change and the Quad are noteworthy," he stated.

"This decade will be shaped by talent and people-to-people linkages. I am glad the Indian diaspora is making an active contribution towards USA’s progress," Modi further said at the meeting.

'Seed Has Been Sown for Strong Relationship Between India and US': PM Modi at Meet With President Biden

"Today’s bilateral summit is important. We are meeting at the start of the third decade of this century. Your leadership will certainly play an important role in how this decade is shaped. The seeds have been sown for an even stronger friendship between India and USA," PM Modi stated.

The prime minister emphasised on the significance of trade and technology for India-US ties, during his meeting with Biden. "There is much to be done in trade. Trade will be an important factor in India-USA ties in the coming decade," he said.

PM Modi Holds Bilateral Meeting With President Joe Biden

Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds a bilateral meeting with US President Biden at the White House. The meeting is expected to last for one hour.

"A decade of transformational partnership awaits! A partnership based on the pillars of – tradition, talent, technology, trade, and trusteeship," said the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, alluding to the meeting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at White House ahead of his bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden. This will be their first in-person meeting.

The Modi-led Indian delegation for the meeting with the US President included External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary HV Shringla, and ndia's ambassador to US TS Sandhu, among others.

What Quad Leaders Are Expected To Announce Today

According to news agency PTI, the White House officials have hinted at what the Quad leaders are expected to announce later on Friday. These include:

  • A new working group on space

  • A supply-chain initiative

  • A 5G deployment and diversification effort

Issues like challenges in the Indo-Pacific, climate change and COVID-19 pandemic will also be reportedly discussed in the meeting.

Officials in Washington have also reportedly told PTI that Quad leaders are planning to roll out vaccine deliverables. Further, they are expected to announce a series of measures in the field of healthcare and infrastructure.

Kamala Harris Hails India's COVID-19 Fight, Modi Calls Her an Inspiration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held bilateral talks with Kamala Harris in Washington DC.

Ahead of the talks, Modi and Harris had issued a joint statement, praising the support provided by the two countries to each other during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Calling Harris' election an inspiration, Modi had said that he expects that the bilateral ties between the India and the US will improve under her and President Joe Biden's leadership.
