US stocks little changed; oil rises

Wall Street stocks opened little changed Thursday following lackluster US economic data and a modest rise in oil prices.

Five minutes into trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 16,347.27, up 10.61 points (0.06 percent).

The broad-based S&P 500 slipped 1.73 (0.09 percent) to 1,910.80, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index lost 11.09 (0.25 percent) at 4,493.15.

The Labor Department reported that US jobless claims, a sign of the pace of layoffs, edged higher in the week ending January 30 and that US productivity dropped three percent in the fourth quarter of 2015.

US oil prices extended the gains from Wednesday's rally, climbing 41 cents to $32.69 a barrel.
