US Indexes Close Higher Friday and for the July 10 Week

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,075.30 on Friday with a gain of 369.21 points or 1.44%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,185.04 for a gain of 32.99 points or 1.05%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 10,617.44 for a gain of 69.69 points or 0.66%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 27.36 for a loss of 1.90 points or 6.49%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 1%, the S&P 500 gained 1.8% and the Nasdaq gained 4%. For the year, the Nasdaq has a gain of 18.33%, the S&P 500 is down 1.42% and the Dow Jones has a return of -9.92%.


Friday's market movers

U.S. indexes ended the day with gains, also contributing to weekly gains. Stock investors remained somewhat cautious with record numbers of coronavirus cases in some states. Twelve states across the country have now reported a record-breaking seven-day average for Covid-19 cases. Gilead (NASDAQ:GILD), however, released a positive report showing success from its Remdesivir drug, particularly in preventing deaths and lowering the mortality rate.

The Nasdaq closed at a record high Friday. The iShares Nasdaq Biotech Index gave back some gains with a loss of 97 basis points Friday.

In other news.

  • The Producer Price Index decreased 0.2% in June and -0.8% year over year.

  • The Core Producer Price Index decreased 0.3% in June and increased 0.1% year over year.

  • The Baker Hughes North American oil rig count increased to 284 from 281.



Across sectors, financials and energy led gains. In the S&P 100, the following stocks led gains:

  • Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) gained 8.13% and reported a record high

  • American International Group (NYSE:AIG) 7.27%

  • Citigroup (NYSE:C) 6.45%

  • U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) 6.24%

  • Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) 5.99%

  • JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) 5.73%

  • Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) 5.47%

  • Simon Property Group (NYSE:SPG) 4.88%



Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,422.68 for a gain of 23.76 points or 1.70%. The S&P 600 closed at 817.37 for a gain of 17.51 points or 2.19%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,006.81 for a gain of 81.24 points or 0.82%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 6,684.72 for a gain of 214.12 points or 3.31%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,772.98 for a gain of 24.37 points or 1.39%; the S&P 100 at 1,481.96 for a gain of 15.92 points or 1.09%; the Nasdaq 100 at 10,836.33 for a gain of 81.74 points or 0.76%; the Russell 3000 at 1,858.09 for a gain of 20.01 points or 1.09%; the Russell 1000 at 1,768.02 for a gain of 18.43 points or 1.05%; the Wilshire 5000 at 32,472.76 for a gain of 355.64 points or 1.11%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 572.19 for a gain of 18.13 points or 3.27%.
