Unum: 4Q Earnings Snapshot

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) _ Unum Group (UNM) on Tuesday reported fourth-quarter net income of $296.2 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Chattanooga, Tennessee-based company said it had profit of $1.44. Earnings, adjusted for investment gains, were $1.41 per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 12 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.38 per share.

The insurance company posted revenue of $3.03 billion in the period, also surpassing Street forecasts. Eleven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $3.01 billion.

For the year, the company reported profit of $1.1 billion, or $5.24 per share. Revenue was reported as $12.02 billion.

Unum shares have decreased 5% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has increased 2%. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $27.65, a fall of 20% in the last 12 months.
