Trump tips Wilson for world snooker title after bowing out in last eight

Judd Trump tipped Kyren Wilson for the Betfred World Snooker Championship crown after seeing his title defence come crashing down at the quarter-final stage at the hands of the world No.8.

The Bristol potter - who had scooped six ranking event titles this season ahead of his trip to the Crucible - had battled into the last eight with 10-8 and 13-11 wins over Tom Ford and Yan Bingtao respectively.

But the 30-year-old’s hopes of sealing successive triumphs in Sheffield were dashed by the hugely impressive Wilson, who led for the majority of the match and ultimately succumbed the world No.1 to 13-9 defeat.

Victory for Wilson sees him progress to the world semi-finals for only the second time in his career, and despite there being plenty of talk about the pair’s frosty relationship off the table ahead of the match, Trump admitted the 28-year-old is going to be hard to stop.

“He’s definitely my favourite to go on and win the title now,” he said. “His long potting was brilliant over the three sessions and it looks like he’s improved a lot.

“He’s taken a step up from when we’ve played before and if he manages to get a bit of luck as well in the next couple of rounds I find it hard to see anyone stopping him.

“Everyone knows we didn’t get on with each other that well in the past but that’s changed now. His style’s slightly different to mine but I think it’s great for the game if there’s someone else in my age group to compete against for the next ten to 15 years and I’m looking forward to our next battle.”

Despite defeat, Trump was content with his performance against Wilson, having made breaks of 72, 100 and 62 to reduce his overnight deficit from 10-6 to 11-9 in the final session.

And having enjoyed such a prolific season - and being recognised as the reigning world champion - Trump insisted he is as hungry as ever to add to his impressive tally of titles in the months ahead.

He said: “I wasn’t disappointed in the way I played - I battled until the end and I felt good out there in all the sessions. Sometimes you just need the rub of the green and I didn’t feel that I had that.

“It’s tough to lose but I’m glad I went out the way I did - I went out fighting, I played pretty well and I felt good in practice. It took a good performance from him to beat me.

“I’m not going to be too hard on myself. When I sit down and reflect in a week or two I’ll know that I’ve had an amazing season. Now it’s a case of me having to put my foot back on the gas, to improve and get ready for the next campaign.”
