Two of Sir Philip Green's top lieutenants have been shown the door in a shake-up of his retail empire's most profitable brands, Topshop and Topman.

Topshop's creative director Kate Phelan, who has been with the business since 2011, and Gordon Richardson, who has served as Topman's head creative for the past 17 years, have been pushed out in the latest reshuffling of Arcadia.

The retail company, which also owns brands Dorothy Perkins, Evans, Burton and Miss Selfridge, announced that David Hagglund would replace Ms Phelan and Mr Richardson in a "newly created position" of creative director across both brands.

Mr Hagglund is known within fashion circles for founding a Stockholm-based creative agency which includes H&M and Hugo Boss as clients. He was also art director at Vogue Paris.

The move to combine the Topshop and Topman creative roles follows the hiring of Paul Price, previously Burberry's merchandising officer, to run the two fashion brands as chief executive.

Mr Price will join Arcadia next month, succeeding Mary Homer, who is leaving to become chief executive of homewares business The White Company after working with Sir Philip for 30 years.

In July Baroness Karren Brady,  boss of West Ham football club, was made chairman of Sir Philip's Arcadia Group, taking over from Lord Grabiner, who had been chairman of the tycoon's family's investment vehicle for 15 years.
