The BBC has axed satirical show The Mash Report.

The programme – which was hosted by comedian Nish Kumar and gave a satirical look at the week's news – is ending after four series.

The BBC said in a statement to Yahoo that the show is being shelved to make room for new programmes.

The statement said: “We are very proud of The Mash Report but in order to make room for new comedy shows we sometimes have to make difficult decisions and it won’t be returning.

“We would like to thank all those involved in four brilliant series and hope to work with Nish Kumar, Rachel Parris and the team in the future.”

The Mash Report started on BBC Two in 2017 and drew a loyal fanbase, but was criticised by some who claimed that it was too left-wing.

News of its cancellation has been met with a mixed response on social media.

Actor Laurence Fox, who has previously been critical of “woke” culture, shared a link to a news article about it being taken off air and tweeted: "Tell me it isn’t true!

"Defund virtue signalling."

Another viewer posted: “The only thing I’ve ever laughed about in relation to the Mash Report is it’s cancellation.

"The last laugh is the best laugh.”

However, another person posted: “I didn't always agree with the politics of the mash report but for comedy I loved it.

"The news desk itself and the on-location reporting elements were some of the best tv I watched.”

"The Mash Report seriously?" said another fan, adding: "@Channel4 can you produce it instead?

"It’s brilliant tv with an amazingly talented team."
