Last week, Great Place to Work Institute Singapore released its first annual list of the nation’s 10 best companies to work for. The study took into account levels of trust and engagement among employees, operating under the assumption that these elements are synonymous with a high-performing work culture.

Seven out of the ten companies were tech firms, with cloud-based customer realtionship company Salesforce taking the number one position. Rounding out the top five were tech giant Cisco, global hotel firm InterContinental, local development consultancy ROHEI, and enterprise software firm SAP Asia.

“Relationships are generally valued at Singapore-based companies,” says Joni Ong, managing director at Great Place to Work Singapore. “We have observed that [the] best companies have strong cultural intent, and have designed people practices to create desired culture. These practices are implemented with authentic human touches by leaders and managers, which translates into positive day-to-day workplace experiences for the employees.”

Culture criteria

Two thirds of a company’s score is based on the results of a trust index employee survey, which was sent to a random sample of employees from each company. Great Place to Work Institute Singapore claims the chosen firms possessed the following qualities in spades:

  1. Are intentional about creating a strong corporate culture.

  2. Execute their HR practices in a warm and respectful way.

  3. Have fun and friendly workplace environments.

  4. Have a highly transparent and open culture.

  5. Have a unique and creative way of connecting employees’ work to a larger purpose, instilling a great sense of pride in the individuals, not just for being a part of the organization but also for their personal accomplishments.

Other tech firms that made the list include 3D design, engineering and entertainment software firm Autodesk Asia, data management and storage company NetApp Singapore, and EMC Singapore, a business that offers cloud computing solutions, data storage, IT security, and big data services.

Great Place to Work Institute Singapore says employees all over the world agree that a great workplace is one where you trust and enjoy the people you work for, and take pride in what you do.

Do you know of any other Singapore-based tech companies that have great company cultures? Who else deserves to be on this list?
