Brit Awards: Spice Girls, Girls Aloud and Sugababes celebrate Little Mix's historic victory

The Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, All Saints and the Sugababes have congratulated Little Mix for becoming the first girl band to win Best British Group at the Brit Awards.

Jade Thirlwall, 28, Perrie Edwards, 27, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 29, made history at the 2021 Brits as the first female group to take the title – and dedicated it to all the girl bands who had been nominated before them.

The Spice Girls celebrated Little Mix's victory on their official Twitter account, writing: "Congratulations @LittleMix Doing it for the Girls!! #BRITs #GirlPower."

Girls Aloud's Nicola Roberts joined in the congratulation, tweeting: "My girl band heart is so happy @LittleMix have just won best band @BRITs !!! The first girl band to ever be awarded it! Proud of you ladies! #girlpower."

All Saints declared: "YES GIRLS!! Congrats @LittleMix and thanks for the shout out."

And the Sugababes said: "@LittleMix thank you for the incredible speech. You are so deserving of this award and we could not be happier for you."

Former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson – who quit the band in December 2020, citing her struggle with anxiety – also congratulated her ex-bandmates with a post on her Instagram Stories.

Nelson, 27, shared a picture of Thirlwall, Edwards and Pinnock with their Brit Award framed with heart and clapping emojis.

Accepting the gong onstage Little Mix dedicated their win to all the British girl bands that went before them.

Pinnock said: "It's not easy being a female in the UK pop industry.

"We've seen the white male dominance, misogyny and lack of diversity.

"We're proud of how we've stuck together, stood our ground, surrounded ourselves with strong women and are now using our voices more than ever."

Thirlwell went on: "The fact that a girl band has never won this award really does speak volumes, so this is not just for us, it's for the Spice Girls, Sugababes, All Saints, Girls Aloud and all of the incredible female bands. This one's for you."

The winners at this year's Brits received two gongs – with a smaller statuette alongside their main prize to share with someone else. Artists Es Devlin and Yinka Illori designed the "double trophy" to promote acts of kindness.

It is the third time Little Mix have been nominated for the award. Girls Aloud and Sugababes were both nominated for the award twice, while All Saints and Spice Girls were both nominated once

Other female bands to have been nominated for the award include Shakespears Sister and Eternal.

Little Mix were formed during the Bootcamp stages of The X Factor in 2011 and went on to win the series.
