From House Beautiful

A property steeped in history, Thornbury Castle in south Gloucestershire has many royal connections, previously being home to kings, queens and dukes over the ages.

Built in the 1500s by the Duke of Buckingham Edward Stafford, Thornbury Castle even houses the honeymoon bedchamber of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn – and you can actually sleep in it!

Thornbury Castle offers The Dukes Bedchamber Experience as a one-night break in the royal four-poster bedchamber, from £415 per couple per night. With all the excitement surrounding the recent royal wedding, it's your chance to stay in a truly regal setting.

The history of Thornbury Castle

Henry VIII took possession of the Tudor castle after having the duke executed on Tower Hill for high treason. He is reported to have spent 10 days here with Anne Boleyn for their honeymoon in 1535. The castle was kept as royal property until the death of Queen Mary I, when it was returned to the Duke’s descendants.

But even if you don’t stay in this special room, there are 28 bedchambers overall, many with four-poster beds and traditional décor.

To highlight the castle’s history, suits of armour, wood panelling and tapestries decorate the interiors of the property. While the four-poster beds, grand fireplaces and elegant halls all enhance the royal atmosphere.

The castle’s many turrets, towers and stone spiral stairs create a magical feel, enough to rival Hogwarts. There's also the dungeon dining room to try out.

Beautiful walled gardens can be enjoyed in the castle’s serene leafy grounds, said to be the oldest Tudor gardens in England. It sounds perfect for those wanting to escape the stresses of everyday life.
