Singapore Press Holdings Limited - MANAGEMENT REPLY: Can Media Fund transform SPH?

23/1/2014 – Singapore Press Holdings has given few clues as to how its latest venture will give the traditional newspaper publisher a new lease of life.

The S$100 mln SPH Media Fund Pte Ltd was incorporated on January 8, with an issued capital of just S$2.

Its declared nature of business involves investment holdings and other activities.

Investor Central. Asian insights for global investors. We ask the tough questions of Asian companies which global investors need answers to.

Question
Question

1. Can SPH Media Fund transform SPH?

That's the critical question, which no one has any answers to yet.

But if it doesn't transform SPH, then it will just hold more small digital media companies which – as can be seen from the Q1 earnings announcement – will contribute more losses than gains.

It has spent US$48 mln on SGCarMart, S$12 mln on ShareInvestor.com and led a US$2.5 mln investment in Chope.

What does it have to show for these? SPH hasn't disclosed how these investments are going.

Will another S$100 mln make a difference?

Question
Question

2. How much in earnings is it expected to contribute?

Once again, this may sound like a premature question, but if you are throwing S$100 mln of shareholders’ money at the problem of “changing economic and market trends", you'd better have some targets in mind.
