Singapore food waste start-up UglyFood shuts after 7 years

SINGAPORE – Local food-waste start-up, UglyFood, has announced its closure, saying it has failed to raise enough funds after seven years of operations.
Announcing on Wednesday (4 January) that it is "winding up" on its Facebook page and on Instagram, UglyFood said, "Sadly we are unable to raise the funds required to grow further, it's been a good run."
The company also said that all deliveries from Wednesday will be refunded and its website will cease to take all orders.
There will be a closing-down sale at Uglyfood's Gambas Crescent store from 5-8 January. It will be for walk-ins only, from 4-9pm.
According to its statement, vegetable and fruit boxes will go for S$20 for up to 10 items while meat, seafood, dry goods and alcohol "add-ons" will go for $40 for between five and 10 items.
"Everything available in the online store should be present," UglyFood said.
Many customers voiced their disappointment on social media.
"This is super sad, really enjoyed ordering from you and you were doing a great job getting decent food out where possible. Best of luck, wish it continued," said Sabrina Shah on the UglyFood Facebook account.
Another customer, Joseph Ooi, wrote,"This is sad news. I've been getting my supply of oat milk and protein from you."

UglyFood was founded in 2016, with a mission to eliminate food waste and revamp the food ecosystem by selling excess or ‘ugly’ fruits and vegetables as well as its own branded products and sustainably sourced goods.
According to Crunchbase, the company previously raised US$120,000 in a pre-seed round. In 2021, it was reported that UglyFood was in talks with three investors to raise funding of about US$1 million.
