Simone Biles Opens Up About Feeling The ‘Weight Of The World’ On Her Shoulders During The Tokyo Olympics

·2-min read

After an uncharacteristically rocky performance at the Tokyo Olympics this Sunday, Simone Biles took to Instagram to remind the world that even though she’s the GOAT, she’s human too.

Over the weekend, Biles performed in the women’s gymnastics qualifications, which determines which gymnasts will advance onto the event finals and compete for a medal at this year’s Games. All eyes were on the U.S. gymnasts, but for Biles and the rest of Team USA, qualifications were a bit shaky. Biles stumbled on her beam dismount and stepped out of the mat during her floor and vault events. And for the first time since 2010, Team USA didn’t finish first in qualifications, instead coming in second behind Russia.

Afterwards, Biles posted on her Instagram about her performance, writing:

it wasn’t an easy day or my best but I got through it. I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times. I know I brush it off and make it seem like pressure doesn’t affect me but damn sometimes it’s hard hahaha! The olympics is no joke! BUT I’m happy my family was able to be with me virtually🤍 they mean the world to me!

In the end, Biles still qualified to compete in all six event finals—team, individual all-around, floor, beam, uneven bars, and vault—becoming the first woman to do since 1992, according to NBC. She also placed first in the all-around qualifications.

Biles won gold in the all-around during the 2016 Rio Olympics, and if she were to do it again this year, she’d be the first woman in over 50 years to win the all-around in successive Games. So even after an off day, the facts remain the same: Biles is the greatest gymnast of all time.
