Sigma-Aldrich (SIAL) Launches Kratom Alkaloid Solutions

Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (SIAL), a leading lab chemical and life science company, said that its Cerilliant brand has launched the first high-quality certified reference standards of the kratom alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

These new Certified Reference Materials provide the testing laboratories deuterium-based internal standards useful for quantitation of mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine levels in plant-based samples using mass spectrometry-based methods.

Mitragyna speciosa, commonly known as kratom, is a plant used for preparing psychoactive drugs. Both mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are psychoactive alkaloids derived from this plant. Kratom works on µ-opioid receptors as a stimulant at low concentrations for treating dose-dependent effects and as an analgesic at high concentrations for treating chronic pain. .

However, kratom carries a high potential of addiction and has reported side effects like seizures, hallucinations, and delusions. It is due to this that the use of this plant has been regulated in some countries including Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, and Myanmar. Moreover, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has currently labeled kratom as a “drug of concern” due to its illegitimate medical uses.
