Shell Petrol Discounts in Singapore – Which Credit Card is Best?

To get the most credit card discounts at Shell, use HSBC credit cards. In particular, if you are a HSBC Premier customer, then the HSBC Premier MasterCard is the card to beat.

Unfortunately, if you’re like most of us, you don’t have $200,000 in deposits, investments and/or insurance with HSBC. For us, the HSBC Visa Platinum Card is the best option. Together with the Shell Escape Card, it provides an pretty impressive discount of up to 18.3%.

For the next few case studies, we’ll use current prices of $1.87 per litre for RON 95 Petrol.

Case Study 1: 2,000cc Car, Petrol Tank 70 litres

Petrol Cost = $130.90

With the HSBC Visa Platinum card, you will immediately get 14% off your bill. That means you only charge $112.57 to your card. Furthermore, If you charge a total of $800 per month to the HSBC Visa Platinum card for all 3 months in a quarter, you’ll get a additional 6% cash rebate, or $5.63. Your total discount is $23.95 or about 18.3%.

Total discount using HSBC Visa Platinum card = $23.96

Case Study 2: 1,600cc Car, Petrol Tank 50 litres

Petrol Cost = $93.50

Once again, using the HSBC Visa Platinum gets you 14% off your bill. That means you will only be charged $80.41. If you charge a total of $800 per month to the HSBC Visa Platinum card for all 3 months in a quarter, you will also earn a cash rebate of 5% of the discounted amount, which comes up to $4.02. Your total discount is $17.11 or about 18.3%.

Case Study 3: 1,000cc Car, Petrol Tank 36 litres

Petrol Cost = $67.32

Firstly, using the HSBC Visa Platinum card gets you 14% off your bill. That means you will only be charged $57.89. If you are able to charge a total of $800 per month to the HSBC Visa Platinum card for all 3 months in a quarter, you will also earn a cash rebate of 5% of the discounted amount, which comes up to $2.89. Your total discount is $12.31 or around 18.3%.

Case Study 4: Motorcycle, Petrol Tank 15 litres

Petrol Cost = $28.05

Using the HSBC Visa Platinum card knocks 14% off your petrol cost. You will only charge $24.12 to your credit card. If you are able to charge a total of $800 per month to the HSBC Visa Platinum card for all 3 months in a quarter, you will also earn a cash rebate of 5% of the discounted amount, which comes up to $1.20. In total, your discount is $5.13 or around 18.3%.

So, in short…

Whenever you buy petrol at Shell, always make sure you have the HSBC Visa Platinum card with you as it provides the best petrol discounts. One thing to note, though, the HSBC cash rebates are capped at $60 or $120 depending on your minimum spending in the month. So do pay attention to your credit card statement.
