New Year, New Me: Setting your Career Resolution for the Year 2022
By Rakel Tang
2021 was a year of trials and tribulations. The COVID-19 pandemic continued, working from home became the new normal, dining restrictions went from 2 to 5 to 2 to 5 people, vaccinated travel lanes opened between Singapore and several other countries, and we learnt a new Greek alphabet thanks to the new COVID-19 variant. Through everything, somehow 2021 flew by and here comes 2022.

Give yourself a pat on the back because you have weathered the storm of 2021 and a brand-new year awaits you. Now that we’re in 2022, it is time for new beginnings, new goals, and new resolutions.
For the Jobseeker
Let’s take it step by step to plan a resolution for the new year.
Step 1: Where are you now?
What career goals are you going into 2022 with? Are you looking to rise in the ranks? Improve your work-life balance? Pursue your passion by making a career switch?
Before planning your next steps, why not look at where you are now? Take some time to sit down and check in on how you are doing using Jobstreet’s career development planner. You might want to engage in some self-reflection or share your thoughts with a trusted friend, family member, or mentor. Once you are ready, it is time to take the next step.
Step 2: Where do you want to go next?
Whether you are a fresh new jobseeker or looking to make that mid-career switch, the path before you is full of exciting new opportunities. When it is time to go, it is time to go.
Which career path do you want to take? When thinking about which path to embark on, it is vital to remember your priorities.
This is what peak performance looks like.
While an ideal job makes you fulfilled, pays the bills, and is not too risky, sometimes life doesn’t let you have it all. Think about your current situation and your immediate needs. Which is your top priority? Which can be sacrificed in a pinch? Only by knowing what you need and having your priorities in order can you know where to go next.
Step 3: How do you get to where you want to be?
Turn that to-do into a done! Once you have finalised your resolution for the new year, it is time to take the steps to work towards it.
Make sure your resume is up to date and work on your cover letter to impress your future bosses. Plan for your interviews in advance and, of course, don’t forget to craft a follow-up email afterwards to leave a lasting impression.
Step 4: How do you ensure that you stay on the right track?
After the excitement of entering the new year dies down, it is easy to forget that you ever set that brand-new resolution. Don’t let it languish in the back of your closet.
Set reminders for yourself to check in
Check in with yourself every month. Where are you at with completing your new year resolution? What are the next steps you need to take to fulfil it?
Get an accountability buddy
Find a trusted friend, mentor, or family member to be your accountability buddy. Tell them about your resolution and ask them to hold you accountable. Perhaps you can even do the same for them!
Step 5: Step into the new year with your brand-new resolution.
