Seniors to look forward to nearly 11,000 new flats

Lifts at 3 HDB estates to be replaced at no cost to residents
A total of 12,600 households are expected to benefit from the early replacement of 280 lifts at Sembawang, Woodlands and Admiralty...

Singapore’s Housing and Development Board (HDB) had completed a total of 9,119 studio apartments catering specifically to the elderly age 55 and above from 2002 to June 2017, according to the Ministry of National Development (MND) in a parliamentary session on 1 August (Tuesday).

“Another 1,875 studio apartments are under construction and are expected to be completed progressively by 2019,” said the MND in a written reply to queries fielded by Kwek Hian Chuan Henry, MP for Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency (GRC).

The Studio Apartment (SA) scheme for seniors was implemented in 1998, but it was merged with the two-room flats scheme and replaced by the two-room Flexi scheme in November 2015.

Under the new Flexi scheme, a minimum of 100 units or at least 40 percent of the two-room Flexi flats in every Build-To-Order (BTO) project must be allocated for the elderly.

Between November 2015 and May 2017, 9,147 two-room Flexi flats were launched. These units are currently under construction and are targeted to be completed progressively by 2021.

Including the studio apartments, HDB will build a grand total of 10,994 units for the elderly from 2019 to 2021.
