The Royal Family have shared a stunning photograph of Prince Philip surrounded by monarch butterflies to highlight the late Duke’s commitment to conservation and work with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The image was shared on the Royal Family’s official Instagram page and was taken in 1988 in Mexico. Prince Philip was watching the migration of Monarch Butterflies with a conservation group, while he was President of the WWF.
The group he met with were working to protect the butterflies from the ongoing threats of logging and deforestation.
The caption explained that the Duke was “involved in many conservations efforts throughout his lifetime, from establishing an alliance between religious leaders and conservationists, to travelling across the Southern Pacific Ocean and Antarctica to identify native seabirds.”
Prince Philip was associated with a staggering 992 charities and organisations throughout his life. Over the next week, the Royal Family social media account will be sharing more highlights from the many aspects of the Duke’s life and work.
It was confirmed on Friday 9 April that Prince Philip had sadly passed away at the age of 99. Military gun salutes were fired across the UK, Gibraltar and on Navy ships at sea over the weekend in honour the Duke of Edinburgh.
It was also announced that Prince Philip’s funeral will take place on 17 April at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. Due to restrictions around the pandemic, only 30 guests will attend the service, including the Queen, Prince Harry, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.
Restrictions also meant that the Duke of Edinburgh would not lie in state, where the public would usually come to pay respects to the coffin, and will instead rest at Windsor.
