A retired computer scientist is selling his 800-acre ranch for $10.95 million

The Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home has been listed for $10.95 million.

A nearly 800-acre ranch belonging to retired computer scientist and engineer Jim Mitchell and wife Judy Wainwright has come on to the market for $10.95 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The ranch, which includes a 9,500-square-foot house inspired by a Frank Lloyd Wright design, is located in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and is a haven for local wildlife like bald eagles and deer.

Mitchell spent decades working with computers and became wealthy enough to buy the ranch and his own plane.

I got into computers in the early days and wrote my fist line of code in 1962,” he told the WSJ

The home is perched on a hill above an area to the north of Steamboat, called Elk River Valley.

Mitchell and Wainwright purchased the home in 1999. They spent several years constructing the home, which was inspired by a Frank Lloyd Wright design.

“We hiked up there in snowshoes in the winter with the architect and within 15 minutes we said the house has to optimize the views and has to have lots of windows,” Mitchell told the WSJ.

All of those windows make for a dramatic scene when the house is lit up at night.

Inside, many of the rooms have incredible views of the surrounding mountains. This one was equipped with a telescope for stargazing.

This hallway has a nice combination of stone and marble.

The kitchen is wide and open, with one island that’s big enough to accommodate five stools across.

A second island includes an enormous range hood and lots of knife storage.

A formal seating area has enough room for a large dinner party. “I’m an engineer. I wanted it first to be functional,” Mitchell told the WSJ.

The master suite includes a large, high-ceilinged bedroom, with a gas fireplace, hidden projection screen, wet bar, private patio, and two offices.

Mitchell designed the mosaic in the master bath himself. The birds are meant to be representative of the sandhill cranes that make their home on the property.

The ranch house has four bedrooms in total, in addition to five full baths and two half baths.

The house has lots of room for fun, too. A lower level room has a pool table and a wine cellar.

There’s also a media room that’s all set up for movie night.

There are two three-car garages on the property. This one holds snowmobiles, among other recreational objects.

Wildlife like deer, elk, coyotes, and porcupines are regularly spotted around the ranch.

“One of the things I love is that it puts me back in touch with the planet. You don’t see a lot of buildings. You just see a lot of grandeur that is the planet we live on,” he told the WSJ.

The house is stunning even in the winter snow.
