Rennes 2-2 Tottenham LIVE! Højbjerg goal! Europa Conference League match stream, latest score and goal updates today

Rennes vs Tottenham - LIVE!

Tottenham begin the group stage of the inaugural Europa Conference League with a trip to France to take on Rennes this evening.

Spurs are England’s sole representative in Uefa’s new third tier club competition, having finished seventh in the Premier League, though they still had to survive a scare in qualifying to reach the tournament proper, overturning a first leg defecit against Portuguese outfit Pacos Ferreira.

Nuno Espirito Santo has warned his players they must forget about their Champions League pedigree, with many of the squad that reached the final in 2019 still involved, while Rennes have recent experience of Europe’s biggest competition themselves having played in it last season, though they picked up only a point as they finished bottom of Chelsea’s group.

Nuno’s men surrendered their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign in meek fashion as they were turned over 3-0 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend, and with a derby against in-form Chelsea to come this weekend, a positive result tonight is something of a must.

Tottenham vs Chelsea live stream: How can I watch Premier League game on TV in UK?

Key Points

  • Højbjerg restores parity again

  • Laborde taps in as Rennes move ahead

  • Wonderful goal brings sides level

  • Tottenham ahead through an own goal

  • TV channel: BT Sport 1

  • Tottenham team news: Ndombele starts

  • Prediction: Rennes 1-2 Tottenham

Full time: Rennes 2-2 Tottenham

19:40 , Daniel Gallan

That’s that then. A cracking game that lost a bit of puff towards the end. Spurs went up through a Bade goal but were pegged back by a sumptuous curling hit from Tait.

Tottenham were second best for most of the contest and were unlucky with injuries.

Rennes got their lead with a Laborde tap in but Højbjerg poked home the equaliser five minutes later.

A point apiece.

Stay tuned for Simon’s report to come.

Another five to go

19:36 , Daniel Gallan

90mins: Five added minutes here. Petering out a touch to be honest. Both teams seem happy with a point.

Five to go

19:29 , Daniel Gallan

85mins: It’s been a really good game. The second half has fizzled out a touch but that was expected given the high tempo of the first and Tottenham taking off Moura and Kane.

But there’s still time for a twist. Rennes getting joy once again down the left, finding a bit if room inside the box and shooting through Guirassy. It goes out for a corner. Is this the moment?

Gill growing down the left

19:25 , Daniel Gallan

82mins: I was critical of the young Spaniard a little while ago but he’s found an extra step and is doing bits down the left. He’s stepping over, running at pace and putting in a low cross that was almost dangerous.

And because I started writing that he’s picked up a yellow for an over enthusiastic challenge.

Alli on for Ndombele

19:22 , Daniel Gallan

79mins: Ndombele had a good game, charging forward and offering neat interplay in midfield. But his race is run. On comes Alli who can turn a game on his own if in the mood.

Simon impressed with Højbjerg who gets a deserving (and rare) goal

19:20 , Daniel Gallan

“Out of nowhere, Spurs are level. Credit to Hojbjerg, who has been solid since coming on. Rennes sounds dead quiet all of a sudden.”

GOAL! Højbjerg taps in equaliser

19:19 , Daniel Gallan

77mins: That’s come from nowhere! It’s a half decent ball from the right that Rennes don’t deal with. A defender gets some contact on it but the ball bounces up kindly for Højbjerg who is on hand to poke it home. Rennes’ lead lasted five minutes.

It’s gone a bit pear shaped from Tottenham, as Simon points out

19:16 , Daniel Gallan

“This game started so well but it has all gone wrong. Injured players and now Rennes lead. Kane and Lloris look glum on the bench.”

GOAL! Laborde taps in!

19:14 , Daniel Gallan

72mins: Gollini parries Sulemana’s shot from the left straight to Laborde who taps in. Tottenham staring at a rude welcome to the Europa Conference.

Better from Gill

19:11 , Daniel Gallan

68mins: He’s found his range now and that’s a wonderful delivery from the left. He hugs the touchline this time making the field big. rather than drive towards the box he puts in an early ball for Scarlett. The young striker is outmuscled by two Rennes defenders and can’t get a clean connection on it but that was better from Tottenham and Gill in particular. More of that please.

Rennes sense blood

19:08 , Daniel Gallan

66mins: Laborde scoops, rather than hits, his shot from the right of the goal. It’s well worked towards him from a central position. The goal scorer Tait is pleasing with his mate, asking why he didn’t square it. Fair question.

With Spurs’ big names off the French club can sniff a chance here.

Simon sees the logic in pulling the skipper off

19:06 , Daniel Gallan

“That was perhaps a wise call by Nuno to take off Harry Kane. He has already lost Lucas and Bergwijn tonight, losing Kane before Chelsea would be unthinkable. A point doesn’t look like a bad result right now.”

Gill getting about, not doing much

19:04 , Daniel Gallan

62mins: Maybe that’s not fair. He does well cantering down the left touch line and gets inside the box. But it’s a poor ball, tamely chipped straight into the ‘keeper’s arms.

Opportunity for Tottenham on the right edge of the box

19:00 , Daniel Gallan

57mins: They’ve been toothless from open play since scoring, but Tottenham are in prime real estate to whip the ball in from the right after Emerson is clattered.

Never mind. Gill botches it and sends it high over the bar.

Kane off as well

18:58 , Daniel Gallan

55mins: Perhaps with an eye on Saturday, Nuno has yanked Kane off. On comes Dane Scarlett.

Of, Emerson replaced Moura. So that’s two changes for Tottenham.

The curse claims another one as Moura shuffles off

18:56 , Daniel Gallan

53mins: He didn’t look right since the challenger which came from behind and snapped Moura’s ankle.

Here’s Simon: “Yet another injury for Tottenham as Lucas Moura, after another strong tackle, is forced to limp off. A reminder Spurs travel to Chelsea on Sunday...”

Ndombele does brilliantly there

18:54 , Daniel Gallan

51mins: Ndombele passes up field and carries on his run. He doesn’t break stride as he plays a neat give and go with Kane. Ndombele bursts into the box, past one defender but is smothered by the onrushing goalkeeper. It bounces out for a goal kick but that’s lovely from the midfielder. He’s had a good game.

Moura down

18:50 , Daniel Gallan

48mins: He’ll (probably) be fine, but Moura is down clutching his ankle. It’s not a good sight as Nuno must be wondering what he’s done to deserve this curse (Simon’s word, not mine)

Half time: Rennes 1-1 Tottenham

18:35 , Daniel Gallan

Simon Collings with some thoughts at the break: “Spurs started well, but they faded and Rennes deserved their equaliser. This is a proper test for Spurs so far.”

Fair assessment that. Once that opening goal went it I thought they’d run away with it. But all Spurs did was poke the bear as Rennes rallied and, spurred on by their fans, deservedly drew level thanks to a lovely curling goal.

Top game this. As Simon said earlier, if this is the quality we should expect from this competition then we’re in for a treat.

Wasted opportunities for Rennes

18:32 , Daniel Gallan

45mins: The French side have a freekick towards the right in a dangerous position but the cross is too deep.

A minute later a wonderful cross from a similar position is delivered by Traore but it skips off the turf and leaves Sulemana with too much to do. His diving header was always going wide.

Kane takes aim

18:27 , Daniel Gallan

42mins: It’s hardly a screamer, but that’s Harry Kane’s first effort on goal. From just inside the box towards the right on the angle. He doesn’t catch clean but no question Tottenham are growing again.

Break in play brings a halt to Rennes’ momentum

18:23 , Daniel Gallan

36mins: A Rennes player went down with a slight niggle and needed attention earlier. This brought a halt in play for a few minutes and every second seemed to suck the energy out of Renne’s charge. Spurs back on the ball after the restart. Lovely ebb and flow to this match.

A cross from Moura comes from the right, Kane can’t get near it but Tottenham starting to threaten again.

Bad news for Spurs

18:17 , Daniel Gallan

31mins: As Simon says, “Nuno’s injury curse strikes again as Steven Bergwijn limps off after a late tackle. Things not going to plan for Spurs so far.”

The Dutchman is replaced by Højbjerg who will bring a different shape to the side. Will be interesting to see how they play this one.

Rennes getting closer

18:15 , Daniel Gallan

30mins: Lovely two-touch interplay from Rennes works an opening for Bourigeaud but the shot is scuffed/smothered and Gollini can collect.

Tottenham can’t get a kick in

18:13 , Daniel Gallan

27mins: Since going ahead through that fortunate own goal, Tottenham have been a yard or two off the pace. But that’s only because Rennes have been immense. Their fans sang even louder once they went behind and now that they’re level again they’re absolutely rocking. Cracking atmosphere. Spurs are clinging on.

Tait has another pop at goal but he drags it wide.

GOAL! Fabulous finish from Flavien Tait

18:09 , Daniel Gallan

23mins: That is a wonderful finish from Tait who uses the Tottenham defender and curls it into the far corner. This has been immensely entertaining.

Here’s Simon Collings: “It has been coming. That’s a really well worked goal and no more than the French side deserve. Who said the Conference League would be low on quality?”

Standar Sport’s Simon Collings is liking what he’s seeing from Rennes

18:07 , Daniel Gallan

“Rennes have been much better since going behind. They’re starting to push men forward and it’s creating chances for them. Spurs just need to weather this storm for a bit.”

Should be 1-1

18:05 , Daniel Gallan

19mins: Bourigeaud lashes one from outside the box and it stings the gloves of Gollini. It loops back into a dangerous area and the onrushing Truffert leaps to nod it home into an empty net. But he doesn’t time his jump at all and gets underneath it as the ball arcs tamely over the bar. Big let off for Spurs.

This Rennes crowd are sucking the ball as red shirts flood forward in search of an equaliser. Loads of blood and thunder from the home side so far

Spurs indeed lucky for opener, but deserved that

18:02 , Daniel Gallan

16mins: Simon is right, the deflection from Moura’s cross that led to the goal was a stroke of luck, but the flick from Ndombele when the ball looked to be going out for a throw and then the quick release from Kane who set Moura away down the right touch line was delicious football. Besides, they’ve bossed the ball so not many inside the ground can argue this isn’t a deserved lead.

Things are heating up

17:59 , Daniel Gallan

13: What’s all this then? Traore and Bergwijn get into a (near) scrap and the referee has to calm things down. This may be the third tier of European club football but it’s got all the ingredients of a continental clash. Loving it so far.

GOAL! Own goal gives Tottenham the lead

17:57 , Daniel Gallan

12mins: Simon Collings for Standard Sport: “A huge stroke of luck for Spurs there, but Nuno won’t care. In fairness, the build-up to the goal was nice, in particular that back heel from Ndombele. He seems in the mood tonight.”

Rennes set up for the counter

17:53 , Daniel Gallan

7mins: There’s no danger as it’s quickly snuffed out, but this attacking Spurs team must be conscious of being countered. Rennes showed some potential down the right.

Spurs look sharp with the ball too

17:49 , Daniel Gallan

4mins: It’s an attacking team and Tottenham are looking to drive forward. Ndombèlé takes the ball up field but is met with resistance. Nice intent though.

Spurs look dashing in all white

17:48 , Daniel Gallan

There’s no blue trimmings for this European adventure. Perhaps they’re hoping to capture the spirit of Real Madrid

Less than 10 minutes to go

17:40 , Daniel Gallan

It’s not the competition that Tottenham and their fans (never mind their owners) want to be in, but it’s the competition they’re in. And since they’re here, they’ll be keen to win in.

In truth they should. Feyenoord and Roma will provide challenges should they meet, but in terms of budgets and star power, Harry Kane and his team will be expected to lift this piece of silverware come May.

Since you’re asking, here’s our pre-match prediction.

17:29 , Daniel Gallan

This match won’t be high up on Nuno Espirito Santo’s priority list, especially with a home game against Chelsea on Sunday.

Against the sixth best team in a relatively weak French league Tottenham’s second stringers should be able to get the job done. Though it won’t be a walkover, the London outfit should be too strong.

Rennes 1-2 Tottenham

Rodon calling on his mates to put Palace defeat behind them

17:21 , Daniel Gallan

The centre back is rallying his mates and looking to put as much distance between themselves and the 3-0 reverse at Palace last weekend.

Joe Rodon looking for swift turnaround as Tottenham begin Europa Conference campaign

Night of firsts for Spurs

17:11 , Daniel Gallan

This is not only the first Europa Conference League match for Spurs (though it would be given it’s a brand new competition) but it’s also the first time they’ll play Rennes.

The Brittany club finished sixth last season where they also finished bottom of the Champions League group, losing five (including twice to Chelsea) and drawing once.

Ndombele starts for Spurs

17:00 , Malik Ouzia

Tanguy Ndombele makes his first appearance under Nuno Espirito Santo as the Portuguese names a strong lineup for what is, on paper, Spurs’ toughest assignment in this group. The Frenchman has been an outcast so far this season after asking to leave in the summer but is back in the fold tonight.

Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn all start in a pretty attacking side.

Rennes team news

Tottenham probable lineup XI: Gollini; Doherty, Tanganga, Rodon, Davies; Winks, Ndombele, Dele; Lucas, Gil, Kane.

Tottenham team news

16:04 , Malik Ouzia

Tottenham must continue to make do without Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso due to quarantine regulations. Japhet Tanganga is available as his red card in the Premier League does not impact his inclusion here.

Son Heung-min, Ryan Sessegnon and Steven Bergwijn are unlikely to make their returns from injury just yet, while Eric Dier is also expected to miss out after going off injured against Palace.
