Norwich has the most community spirit in the UK, thanks to the happiness levels of locals, its large number of animal shelters and successful volunteer schemes, a new study has found.

PensionBee looked at 30 of the most populated towns and cities around the country, analysing factors including recycling rates, fly tipping incidents, the rate of electric vehicles, charity shops, charities, and searches for volunteering.

While Norwich took the top spot, scoring an average of 80.3, Reading in the South West scooped second, with thousands of volunteers doing all they can to make a difference. Other caring areas in the study include Swindon, Peterborough, Bristol and Bournemouth.

'Our research highlights the caring nature of many residents in towns and cities across England, based on a range of factors relating to community, charity and the environment,' says Romi Savova, CEO at PensionBee.

'The past year has been difficult, but it's also brought many of us together and shown how caring our communities can be. We've seen people go out of their way to help vulnerable neighbours (and strangers) survive during tough periods of isolation, while furloughed workforces volunteered at local charities to support them through this challenging time. And lest we forget, the cheers that could be heard on Thursday evenings as streets across the country were filled with people standing on their doorsteps to clap for our NHS.'
