Universal Pictures International has apologised after using a male actor to dub Laverne Cox's voice in the Italian-language version of Promising Young Woman.

Earlier this week, The Guardian reported that the film's release in Italy had been pushed back after a clip of the film was shared by Universal Pictures Italy on May 6.

The clip showed that Orange Is the New Black star Cox's voice was overdubbed by actor Roberto Pedicini.

In a statement, Universal said: "We are deeply grateful to Laverne and the transgender community for opening our eyes to a bias that neither we nor many in our industry had recognised.

"While there was no malicious intent behind this mistake, we are working diligently to fix it. We have begun re-dubbing Ms Cox's voice with female actors in our international territories and are pushing back release dates to ensure the correct version is available.

"We are sorry for the pain caused but are thankful that we can address the situation on this film and prevent similar mistakes from happening again on future projects."

Digital Spy has reached out to reps for Laverne Cox for comment.

Cox plays Gail in Promising Young Woman, the cafe boss and friend of Carey Mulligan's Cassie.

Promising Young Woman is available to watch on Sky Cinema and NOW.
