Yahoo Finance Priority cabins on NEL trains for vulnerable commuters by end-2020
SINGAPORE — The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will launch a one-year pilot for priority cabins on the North East Line (NEL) trains at the end of this year.
Under this initiative, the two centre cabins on each NEL train will be designated as Priority Cabins for “vulnerable commuters” such as seniors, expectant mothers, wheelchair users, persons with disabilities and parents with young children.
The initiative was announced by Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary of State for Transport, during his ministry’s Committee of Supply debate in Parliament on Thursday (5 March).
“Commuters in these cabins, which will be located near station lifts where possible, are encouraged to give way to the more vulnerable commuters,” he said. “The idea for this initiative came from various public engagements done to better understand commuters’ needs.”
The priority cabins will feature prominent visual cues and signage that encourage commuters to allow vulnerable commuters to board and alight first, give up their seats to those who need them more and keep the wheelchair spaces free.
Commuters will also be informed of the new initiative through video clips and station announcements which will be played at all NEL stations. Customer service officers will also be on hand to help guide commuters.
The initiative stemmed from feedback received during public consultations for the Land Transport Master Plan 2040 and the Family Friendly Transport Advisory Panel.
